Delete your account

This page explains how to delete your bugungisi account, exactly what is deleted, and the few things that are kept. You do not need an account or a login to read it.

How to delete your account

What is deleted

• Your sign-in account, meaning your email address and password. The address becomes free to sign up with again.
• Every postcard you posted, along with the photo, the time, the city, the country, the map coordinates and the spot name on it.
• Postcards of yours that companions passed along. Those copies disappear from their feeds and passports too.
• All the hearts and comments other people left on your postcards.
• Your hearts and your comments on other people’s postcards.
• Your companions, and any connection requests waiting in either direction.
• Your passport prompts, your bio, your profile photo, the city you are based in, where you work, where you studied, and your birthday.
• Your username and display name.
• Anyone you blocked, and anyone who blocked you.
• Reports you filed about other people.
• Tags of you that were still waiting for your answer.
• The device token used to send push notifications to your phone.

Your postcard photos and your profile photo are deleted from storage as part of this. If that last step does not finish, for example because the app loses its connection at that moment, your postcard photos are already permanently unreachable, and you can write to support@bugungisi.com and we will remove anything left over.

What is kept, and why

bugungisi is a small shared space, so a few traces of you live inside other people’s data rather than your own. Deleting those would take things away from them. Wherever your name would have appeared, it now reads “A former member”.

• Private chats. The people you messaged keep their conversations with you, including what you wrote. A message belongs to both people, and removing the thread would delete their own words too. Your name in it becomes “A former member”. Where a message pointed at a postcard you deleted, it reads “This postcard is gone.”
• Invite lineage. People you invited keep the record of how they joined. It reads “Invited by A former member”.
• Shared postcards. If you accepted a tag on someone else’s postcard, that postcard is theirs and stays as it is, with your name shown as “A former member”.
• Reports about you. If someone reported you, that report is kept. An abuse record has to outlive the account, or deleting the account would erase the evidence.
• Your invite codes, switched off. The codes you had made are kept, and permanently deactivated: nobody can join with them, and they no longer lead to any profile. They stay switched off rather than disappearing because a code you once sent to a friend must never become free for someone else to claim and use as their own.
• An empty profile shell. One row remains so those chats and lineage lines have a name to point at. It holds no photo, no bio, no city, no birthday, no prompts, no username and no email. It cannot be searched for, cannot be found by invite code, and cannot be signed in to.

How long any of this is kept

The deletion itself is immediate. There is no waiting period, no queue and no way to undo it or restore the account afterwards.

The items in the section above are kept for as long as the people they belong to keep their own accounts. There is no automatic expiry, because deleting them later would remove other people’s messages and records without their knowing.

If you only want to remove some things

You do not have to delete your whole account to remove your content. In the app you can delete any single postcard, which also removes its photo and everything attached to it, and you can delete any comment you wrote. You can also disconnect from, or block, any companion.
